Academic standards - Graduate Students

The faculty in the School of Public Affairs has approved the following academic standards:

  • Dismissal will be recommended if a student has received three (3) “C+” and/or lower grades in course work taken after admission to the program. No more than two (2) “C” grades in core courses will be permitted to be used on the Program of Study.
  • Per ASU Graduate Education policy: “Grades of ‘D’ or ‘E’ cannot be used to meet the requirements for a graduate degree, although they are used to compute the GPAs. A student receiving a ‘D’ or ‘E’ must repeat the course in a regularly scheduled (not independent study) class if it is to be used on the program of study.”
  • No student may have more than two (2) incompletes at any one time. A student is barred from taking further course work until one or more of the incompletes is removed.
  • All work used toward the MPA or MPP degree or a Graduate Certificate must be completed within six (6) consecutive years.  Doctoral students must adhere to the Graduate Education timelines.
