Innovative internship for future public leaders

On December 3 ten ASU students completed semester long internships with various Maricopa County, Arizona governmental agencies as part of the MCLEAPS Internship Program (Maricopa County Leadership and Education Advancing Public Service). The MCLEAPS program was started by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors and Arizona State University in 2014 and is open to all ASU students.  The School of Public Affairs is very proud to have had four students in the latest group of MCLEAPS interns.

During the MCLEAPS internship experience, selected students earn a semester waiver of ASU tuition and fees, academic credit toward their degree, and receive a stipend from Maricopa County for project work performed.  Additionally, the MCLEAPS internship program provides students with highly relevant work experience, professional development and cross-departmental training, and the opportunity to build a network of professional connections for career entry and advancement.

Earlier this year the MCLEAPS program received a national achievement award from the National Association of Counties (NACo).  Each year NACo selects innovative programs in county government for a variety of awards.  The MCLEAPS internship program was received an award in the category of “Civic Education and Public Information.”
