Have an Urban Experience

The Urban Experience is a weeklong summer program for high school students through the Urban & Metropolitan Studies program at ASU.

  • What are the greatest challenges faced by urban regions in Arizona?
  • How can we best address the issue of rapid growth?
  • What can we do to make Phoenix more livable?
  • How can we become a model of urban sustainability?

These are key issues for the 21st century. The Urban Experience offers students an opportunity to learn about these issues from leading practitioners and researchers. Students will learn about what makes urban environments unique and about the many exciting developments currently taking place in Phoenix. They will apply what they learn to a group project focused on a selected topic. Students will walk away with a holistic view of cities and their component parts and they will see how that knowledge is applied in Phoenix and other urban areas. Students will have unique opportunities to see what an Urban Experience is.

Activities

Activities during the weeklong precollege summer program include tours, in-class activities, guest speakers, and a group project. The project will offer students a chance to reflect upon their experience in the city and to recommend suggestions for improving it. Topics for the project include adaptive reuse of historic buildings, designing a park, planning sustainability initiatives, creating an urban small business, and much more.
