Elizabeth Corley has a new book, Urban Environmental Policy Analysis. This timely book provides a wealth of useful
information for following through on today's renewed concern for
sustainability and environmentalism. The book is co-authored with former SPA professor Heather Campbell (Claremont Graduate University). Felipe Ruiz, ASU College of Public Programs, created many of the designs contained within the book. The book is designed to help city
managers, policy analysts, and government administrators think
comprehensively and communicate effectively about environmental policy

This year’s awardee is Gerald J. Miller. Jerry is a Professor in the School of Public Affairs at Arizona State University, and has been a productive scholar for over 30 years. The letter of nomination for Dr. Miller noted his “significant contributions in advancing the theories and practices of organization theory and behavior into pace-setting discussions and testing of public budgeting and financial management topics.”Supporters also mentioned Dr. Miller’s research record as being “impressive, rigorous, and consistent.” His skills as an educator were also highlighted: “There is no doubt that Jerry Miller represents the paragon of a lifelong scholar, educator and mentor, who has and continues to successfully and effectively contribute to the lives of so many students of public administration and finance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elizabeth Corley has the following recent publications: Ho, S. Stone Service to ASPA Award. The Stone Award pays tribute to ASPA members who have contributed outstanding services to the Society. Jim also has a new book out. More Than Mayor or Manager (Georgetown University Press), edited with Douglas Watson, looking at cities that have changed (or contemplated changing) models of governance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the fall, Joe Cayer had a chapter in newly published book Comparative E-government titled “Bridging the Other Divide: An Assessment of the Usability of Trinidad and Tobago Government Websites.” His co-author was SPA doctoral alum Charlene Roach. Two other alumni, Dianne Wigand and Jeanine Reilly also had chapters in the book. Joe is also co-author of the new edition of American Public Policy: An Introduction. The book is a collection of original articles examining episodes in the historical development of shareholder rights ranging from 13th century Venice to 19th century China. It was inspired by the 400th anniversary of the celebrated shareholder disputes involving the Dutch East India Company in the early 17th century. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Joanna Lucio (with Edith Barrett) has an article, "Community Lost and Found: Satisfaction and Collective Efficacy Among Relocated Public Housing Residents," in the current issue of the Journal of Poverty. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The School of Public Affairs is represented with two articles in a new Special Issue of the Public Administration Review “Looking Into the Future of Public Administration in 2020.” Erik Johnston has an article on “Governance Infrastructures in 2020” which considers the future of “smart governance” which would leverage technology and other novel mechanisms to increase government capacity through enhanced citizen participation. And Jonathan Koppell has a piece called “Administration Without Borders” which argues that governance does and will increasingly transcend boundaries, between political jurisdictions and sectors, requiring a similar broadening of our field. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gerald Miller's paper (with Jonathan Justice) "Debt Management Networks and the Proverbs of Financial Management" has been accepted for publication in the Municipal Finance Journal. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Janet Denhardt and Jim Svara’s white paper on citizen engagement has been released by the Alliance for Innovation. Tom Catlaw, Barbara McCabe, and doctoral graduates Janet Woolum and Kelly Campbell Rawlings contributed essays. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Erik Johnston was recently an invited speaker at the First Conference on Community Resiliency in Zurich, Switzerland to give a talk: “From Evidence to Decisions: Overcoming the Barriers of Integrating Scientific Evidence with Policy Deliberations.” At the upcoming Computational Social Science Society Conference, he will be on one of the featured panels discussing “Agent-based models informing policy: guidance or gimmick.” ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yushim Kim, Jim Svara and Chris Herbst were awarded seed grants through the College of Public Programs to advance three new research projects. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yushim Kim is part of a team that received a $300,000 grant from the Korean Research Foundation to carry out "Research on the Korean People-State Relationship." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elizabeth Corley is Co-Principal Investigator of the ASU team which received renewal of the NSF grant funding $6.5 million Center for Nanotechnology in Society at ASU (CNS-ASU). He has overall responsibility for research administration, strategic research initiatives, several innovation and entrepreneurship programs, and corporate engagement.
